Styling a t-shirt is easy if you let your imagination run wild. For those of you who think that t-shirts can only be worn with jeans, I beg to differ. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the look of a great pair of jeans and a cute top, perhaps even a t-shirt. But, why be predictable when you can shake things up a little bit? Or, as in the words of my friend, Lauren Lake, why be ordinary when you can be extraordinary?!

As you can see, the t-shirt above is eye-catching on it’s own. The bright colors and interesting design certainly make a statement. BUT, when it is unexpectedly paired with this fun tiered fringe skirt, it goes from eye-catching to sublime. This outfit makes you think about styling the t-shirts in your closet in a whole new way! Just because t-shirts are deemed casual by their very definition doesn’t mean you have to style them in a casual way.

My Summer Saturday morning outfit usually consists of a t-shirt and cutoff shorts. But last year, as Summer gave way to Fall and I began thinking about outfit variations for cooler temps, I started thinking about styling a t-shirt in a way that would take my weekend gear up a notch. I mean, why not? This way, I only had to get dressed once and could go from my morning coffee run to brunch, errands and then dinner without much fuss. Do I feel overdressed? Nope, not at all … I subscribe to the belief that you can never be overdressed or overeducated.

T-Shirt Styling Tips
First and foremost, as with all things, buy t-shirts that you love. T-shirts that make you smile, t-shirts that are comfortable, t-shirts that fit you well. Now let’s get started! Pull out your favorite tee’s and try these t-shirt styling tips to take your t-shirt game up a notch:
- T-shirts, even one with a pattern on it, often pair well with patterned items. Generally, the pattern, colors or phrases on a t-shirt are big enough to be seen, but small enough that they don’t clash with a patterned item on the bottom.
- Pair t-shirts with skirts – midi skirts, mini skirts, tulle skirts …. the world is your oyster. Styling a t-shirt with a skirt lends an air of femininity to your overall look. To dress it up add a heel, to dress it down a fun pair of sneakers.
- Finish your look with a jean jacket, blazer, cardigan, leather jacket or down vest to add another layer of dimension and further define the “look” your going for.
- And lastly, styling a t-shirt should be fun, don’t stress out about being perfect or matchy-matchy … your goal is upgraded casual.
