Navigating the World of Social Media

This is a snapshot of the Effie’s Paper Instagram feed.

Awhile ago, in an interview I was asked the simple question, “How did you build your audience on social media?” Obviously, there’s no simple answer.

But, I have distilled what we do for the Effie’s Paper social media feeds into bite size chunks with the aim to help. Social media is a big part of marketing a business today. The platforms I focus on for Effie’s Paper are Instagram and Pinterest. Now, to answer the question.

We repurpose the Effie’s Paper Instagram content on our Pinterest feed. Consequently, this helps to maintain consistency with our overall brand aesthetic.

My Answer to the Question

Initially, to be perfectly honest, delving into the realm of social media wasn’t on my radar, let alone being the face of our brand (despite appearances!). Years ago, I handed everything off to an intern, Chloe, who eventually became our social media manager. She urged me to step into the spotlight, insisting that “people buy from other people.” And she was right.

This super sweet email from one of our OG customers made my day and proved the point, “people buy from other people.”

Making The Most of Social Media

Believe it or not, Chloe played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetic you see on our feed today. Instagram has evolved into our virtual storefront, a marketing powerhouse beyond my wildest imagination. Today, we all peruse someone’s Instagram feed before visiting their website. And with the ability to shop directly on Instagram, it’s evolution has changed the way we all think about business.

Consistency has been our guiding principle, a strategy Chloe and I crafted years ago. Despite my initial reservations, Instagram has become a personal favorite. Yet, like many, I grapple with its intricacies.

The look on my face says it all. Some days I have no interest in having my photograph taken.

Over time, I’ve learned that consistency is key. As a result, you don’t need a massive following; a loyal one suffices. The best way to cultivate loyalty is through regularity – consistent posting, voice, and photography. Many inquire about our feed’s curation process, so here are my top five tips:

  1. Choose a Color Scheme: Ours revolves around white and pink hues, ensuring a seamless flow from one post to the next.
  2. Capture Abundantly: Quality content is paramount. Hence, investing in equipment and taking the time to hone your skills both behind and in front of the camera is paramount.
  3. Embrace Editing: Never post an unedited photo. Experiment with editing apps or utilize Instagram’s filters for added visibility.
  4. Commit to Consistency: Daily posting may seem daunting, but it’s essential, especially as you refine your approach.
  5. Diversify Your Content: Mix it up with outdoor shots for optimal lighting, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and images that reflect your brand’s essence.
