A Grownup Playdate? Yes Way!

Last month, the amazing couple behind the brand AphroChic, Jeanine Hays and Bryan Mason, invited my husband, Todd, and I to The Bedford Playhouse (home of the Clive Davis Art Center) in Bedford, New York for a grownup playdate.  To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect … a grownup playdate?  With people I don’t really know? I try to be open to new possibilities and this was definitely one of those, so I said ok.  My husband kept asking me what exactly we would be doing.  I didn’t have much of a response for him other than that Jeanine and Bryan said it would be a Day of Exceptional Living with other New York “creatives”.

We arrived at The Bedford Playhouse and, in addition to Jeanine and Bryan, there were three other couples – we made the fourth of the invitees.  Everyone kind of looked familiar – which totally makes sense since we’re all creatives living and working in New York city.  It’s highly likely we’d been orbiting one another for ages and didn’t even know it.  As the day began to unfold and coffee, and then cocktails, were served the group started to loosen up.

Making New Friends As An Adult

Making new friends as an adult can sometimes be tricky.  And making new couple friends in particular can be hard because in order for the friendship to work, all four people have to get along on some level.  But, I learned at an early age that one should always have room in her heart for new friends.  So, after the initial awkwardness I dove in.  I mean, why the heck not, right?  Well, it was kind of a perfect storm; I have to credit the genius of Bryan and Jeanine.  They did a GREAT job of couple matching.  Their goal was to get a group of “creatives” together to talk about what exceptional living means to each of us. It was nice to have an intellectual conversation that neither revolved around the Instagram algorithm nor the current state of our political union. (I know two totally different topics, but two I often find myself engaging in.)

A Day of Exceptional Living

It was such a treat to be hosted by AphroChic Magazine and Thermador (yes, the appliance company – their appliances were used for the Green Room makeover where our luncheon was held) for an afternoon filled with good food and great conversation.  The playhouses’ executive chef, Keelin Maniscalco, prepared a menu of items sourced from the local area. Bedford, New York is home to dozens of farms and farmers markets, the menu included an assortment of sustainable goodies, including a green goddess dressing that the chef had prepared that morning. An assortment of wines from the McBride Sisters Collection were paired with the afternoon meal.

A big thanks to AphroChic and Thermador – we had a great time, the grownup playdate was a success!  And the best part is that we made new friends that we’ll continue to spend time with and get to know even better.  Sometimes the best thing to do is to be open to the possibilities, you never know what doors they might open.
